Remembering the Walkman

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day. He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant 1979 WalkmanTHAT big. It was the size of a small book.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the Sony Walkman. As someone nearly that old myself, I felt it necessary to share this BBC article in which a 13-year-old boy trades in his iPod for its much older, distant cousin.

Chrisette Michele defies the Sophomore Jinx

Chrisette Michele: Epiphany
Released 5/5/09
4.5/5 starsepiphany-chrisette-michele-300x300

For many artists, the sophomore album is a crucial one. If its predecessor was a hit, the bar is set high, but if it was a flop, this album could feasibly make or break their career. Many artists have fallen into the curse that is the "sophomore jinx,"  but Chrisette Michele manages not only to meet the bar, she exceeds all previous expectations with Epiphany.

With Epiphany, Chrisette's traditional vocal stylings have evolved into a more well-rounded R&B sound, retaining the jazz influences from her debut album,  I am, yet adding more of a modern, urban, youthful vibe. Epiphany mainly focuses on the joys and sorrows love brings from the viewpoint of a strong, independent woman, with a fragile heart.

The first single "Epiphany," bearing the albums title, begins with "It's
over." The Ne-Yo-produced piano driven single describes how Michele has
finally come to an important realization and decides that it's time to
leave an unhealthy relationship. It is the perfect opening to a stellar
album.

Following "Epiphany" is the beautifully written ballad "Notebook,"
describing how Michele is afraid to tell a prospective mate that she has
a crush and instead opts to confide in the pages of her notebook.

The album hit's its stride with "Blame It on Me," in which Michele
is at her finest vocally, confessing that she doesn't care who takes the blame
for a failed relationship "as long as it's over."

Next is "All I Ever Think About." Its old school R&B vibe, heavy bass and impassioned vocals make it the album's best, as Michele bares her heart and soul over an imperfect relationship, which in fact is quite perfect.

Epiphany successfully moves from soulful melodies to urban-pop with
the acoustic guitar-ridden "Playin' Our Song" and "On My Own." The
former has Michele convincing herself that she's fine after a breakup, but in reality she's heartbroken, while the latter has Michele acknowledging its time to claim her independence and transform into a woman.

Many of the albums standouts were written and produced by R&B singer  Ne-Yo, including  "Porcelain Doll, "Another One" and "What You Do." Chrisette is a modern day Billie Holiday on the feisty empowering, "Porcelain Doll", proclaiming boldly that she is no one's trophy. "Another One" echo's the sentiments of the aforementioned, as Michele confesses that she's a "grown woman, dealing with grown woman things". And with "What You Do", Michele makes it clear that actions speak louder than words.

The majority of Epiphany consists of ballads and mid-tempos, but "Mr.Right" and "Fragile", prove Michele she can successfully tackle up-tempo's as well. The Doo-Wop, Hip-Hop and Lauryn Hill influenced "Mr. Right" finds Michele explaining how she has found the perfect person for her. "Fragile" and "I'm Okay" expose Michele's vulnerabilities and express how love has hurt her.

Epiphany encompasses all the qualities needed to produce a classic album, with its colorful production, catchy melodies and complex vocal arrangements, thoughtful lyrical content and unique, edgy vocals. Chrisette Michele has truly reinvigorated the world of R&B music, as Ephiphany is one of the years best.

Free Music + Artists Get paid $ = OMG

Full Disclosure: Mz. Kelly is a summer intern at ReverbNation where she is learning about technology, how to help artists, and continuing to love music.

With the RIAA hacking away at illegal downloaders, musicians enduring the great-unknown future of the music industry, and everyone feeling the effects of a struggling economy, creative ideas for survival are needed.  In an attempt to provide solutions to changing times, local company ReverbNation has paired with Microsoft Windows to provide an answer, and it's called "Sponsored Songs."

The idea is simple.  Fans get free legal downloads of songs from a surplus of bands.  Bands are paid money for every unique download of their song.  The sponsor's brand image, or advertisement, is embedded with the song's cover art so that it travels from listener to listener.  Each download equates to fifty cents so if you can't go to a music show you can always support by downloading. If the program is successful it could include other sponsors in the future--- anyone thinking possible Outback Steakhouse Sponsored Songs, presented by Of Montreal?

Hammer No More The Fingers

ReverbNation has provided the platform for the program.  Many local artists are included in the launch of the program (check out Jake Seaton's list here), including WKNC favorite, Hammer No More The Fingers, who were included in the official press release.  Joe Hall, of HNMTF, said, "We're always looking for ways to reach new fans, and the team at ReverbNation is always working hard on new and creative ways to help Artists like us succeed.  With Microsoft's participation in the Sponsored Songs program, Artists earn money for their hard work and fans get free music."

For all the bands available for download, check out http://www.reverbnation.com/windows.

NIN|JA, A tour which left a hole

NINJA 2009 089

Trent Reznor has decided to hang up the Nails. After 20 years of touring and making music, on the twentieth anniversary of Pretty Hate Machine, Trent has decided that it is time for Nine Inch Nails to stop making music and touring. Before embarking on the aptly named, Wave Goodbye Tour, he said, "It's time to make NIN disappear for a while. What this tour meant to me, was one last hurrah."

The emotion and energy shown by Trent was astronomical. He, and the rest of the members of the band made it a show I will never forget. From me screaming at the top of my lungs, and dancing in my seat to songs like "Wish," "Survialism," and the epic closure "Head Like A Hole." I will never forget the goosebumps I got upon hearing "The Fragile," "Le Mer," and the haunting but beautiful "Hurt." It's a sad day to see them go, but hopefully they will grace us with their presence sometime down the road with an album that will blow us away, and show us why Trent Reznor is one of the greatest musicians of all time. Until that time comes, I will always remember the show, and the pain in his voice as he sang "You can have it all, my empire of dirt. I will let you down, I will make you hurt." As NIN left the stage, I was still in awe of their show and all I could do was wave goodbye.

Finally, The Love Language in-studio interview from 5/8/09

Go ahead, pull out the wooden ruler and lay down a good whack across the top of my hands.  I've been a bad WKNC blogger.  If I was being graded on timeliness, there would be a big red "F" at the top of this blog, but, thankfully, you as a blog-reader & lover of WKNC would never employ such emotional damage like that of my former college professors, right?

And although this does not relate to the interview, I wanted to post this pic.  Jake Seaton over at Music.MyNC deilvers a wonderful tweet, twitter.com/jseaton, and this picture was in his feed recently.  Jake, I won't ask why you weren't blasting WKNC 88.1fm.  I will assume that  you must have been driving your car, nearing the US-Canadian border, out of our 25,000 watt listening area.

24 Hours on the Air with Kyle

WKNC has been good to me over the past 4 years.  I had the privilege of sharing some awesome tunes with everyone through the Dance Dance Revolution, and during my term as General Manager over the past academic year we did some awesome things here at WKNC, we even launched this very blog.

Unfortunately as a recent graduate of NC State University society has pressured me into "moving on with my life" which entails me leaving Raleigh and the warm embrace WKNC.  But before I bid you all farewell please join me and listen in as I take control of the studio for 24 straight hours from Tuesday, June 23rd at noon to Wednesday, June 24th at noon. I will be pumping up all of your favorite WKNC jams for a whole day across Daytime, Local Lunch, Underground, and Afterhours formats. No artists will be repeated.

Stay classy, triangle. (Especially you, Durham)

Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise Visualized

Note frequency visualization of Decatur.

Jax de Leon, a student at Purchase College’s School of Art and Design, has created a series of visualizations of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise album.

In an interview with Perfect Laughter, de Leon states:
How did you end up choosing Illinoise? Did you consider any other albums?

Illinois was the inevitable choice for me. I listened to it in the car on the way to my freshman year of college shortly after it was released in 2005, and it’s been my favorite album ever since. It’s such a complete album, not just a series of singles, and I’ve always thought of it as a beautiful piece of art that deserves to be listened to very carefully. I considered various other albums and artists (The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, even The Beatles, my first love) but I always knew I would end up choosing Illinois.

WKNC finalist for Best Radio Station and Best DJ

N.C. State’s student radio station earned recognition as one of the best in the Triangle in Independent Weekly’s annual “Best of the Triangle” reader survey. Kyle Robb, the station’s general manager for 2008-2009, accepted the award during his Jun. 10 radio program.

WKNC 88.1 FM, along with Clear Channel’s G105, received finalist honors for Best Radio Station. WUNC 91.5 FM, the NPR-affiliated station from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earned the top award.

Kelly Reid, known as Mz. Kelly to WKNC listeners, was a finalist for Best Radio DJ. She is one of three WKNC staff recognized as among the Best in the Triangle in recent years. Tom Wharton was voted Best Radio DJ in 2006 and Sam McGuire received a finalist nod in 2007.

Mike Alston, who took over for Robb as general manager in April, thanked the listeners for their loyalty. “We are honored to be finalists,” he said. “We can’t compete with larger stations in terms of resources, but we have a dedicated staff and dedicated listener base.”

“The fact that a group of students can earn this kind of recognition year after year shows the value the student media have to N.C. State University,” Jamie Lynn Gilbert, the station’s advisor, said.

More than 3,000 people filled out the 2009 Best of the Triangle ballot, voting on everything from best pet specialty store to best comfort food.

Independent Weekly voted WKNC Best Radio Station in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The station was named Best College Radio in 2004 and 2005, as well as Best Radio for Music in 2005. WKNC also earned top awards from Spectator in 2001 and 2002.

Band Together, June 6

BandTogetherMarquee

As someone who has worked more than a dozen on-air fundraisers, practically begging for the telephone to ring, I wholeheartedly agree that the best way to raise money is through a rocking concert. WKNC does it through our annual Double Barrel Benefit and so does Band Together NC, a local non-profit whose mission is "to raise funds and awareness for select charities through events that showcase and support musical talent." Since its formation in 2001, Band Together has raised more than $635,000 for Triangle charities.

Band Together's latest effort took place Saturday, June 6 with Chatham County Line, The Rosebuds and Rusted Root performing on the Lincoln Theatre Street Stage. Band Together alumni HOBEX closed out the evening with a set inside the Lincoln. MyNC.com reports the Band Together committee presented a $108,000 check to the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood just before Rusted Root took the stage.

Chatham County Line took the stage at 6 p.m. I could hear the beginning notes of "The Carolinian" as I rushed to the blocked off area of Cabarrus Street between Blount and Wilmington in downtown Raleigh. The Lincoln Theatre street stage was against the Wilmington Street side, with the Silent Auction area, requisite Budweiser beer line and Southern Season Catering trailer leading to Blount.

With the banjo, mandolin and guitar players crowded around the microphone and the bassist two steps behind, the mic stand could have just as easily read WSM as Chatham Co Line. The Raleigh-based quartet makes appearances on Americana, Blues and Co. as well as during our daytime format, with their album IV. The set list included newer tunes "Chip of a Star" and "Whipping Boy" and older ones like "Route 23." The crowd was a little thin when the band began, but filled in as the set wore on, prompting one of the band members to compliment the crowd for being much better than the one there 15 minutes prior.

The%20Rosebuds

Indie pop rockers The Rosebuds were the evening's second act. Guitarist Ivan Howard led the crowd in a sing-a-long on "Nice Fox," encouraging the crowd to yell so loud they could be heard in Fuquay. The decibel level didn't get quite that high, but the crowd seemed genuinely engaged, swaying as they repeated "and it don't mean nothing at all." The Raleigh duo has a sparse performance schedule this summer, but will be at the Duke Gardens this Wednesday, June 10th.

Easy Company, courtesy of the band's Myspace page

At 5:00, rock orchestra Easy Company joined us to talk a little about who they are, what influences them, and what to expect at their show Saturday, June 6, at the Halle Cultural Arts Theatre in Apex, NC.  They also performed (as a mere 9-piece) 2 songs in the studio. Check it out below.

Lastly, DJ Mikey (who moonlights as DJ Wobble Wobble) chatted with Brian of Lonnie Walker about their new album, These Times Old Times (out on Terpsikhore Records), as well as their CD Release Show/Party.  As you have probably heard, they played at Schoolkids Records on Hillsborough Street and then moved to Adam Peele 's warehouse for another show and a party late night.  Check out what they had to say about the album, the label, touring, and songwriting below.

Local Beat recap 5/15/09

We packed quite a bit into an hour and half last Friday on the Local Beat.

At 5:00, Kim Gray brought a rather large posse with her, including Megan and Ian from Pistil, Paul and Junko from Scientific Superstar, Teresa from The Virgo 9, and Shirle from Free Electric State.  We chatted about the upcoming Pick n Bitch Festival at the Pinhook in Durham.  Our topics of discussion ranged from Durham's (undue?) status as official "underdog of the triangle" to the word bitch and its connotation.

Then at 6:00, Liza Kate and Jenks Miller (Mount Moriah, In the Year of the Pig, un deux trois, Horseback) of Holidays for Quince Records joined us.  Liza had her release show that night for her new album, Don't Let the Dogs.  We chatted a bit about the label and the weekend-long Holidays for Quince block party, and she was kind enough to play a few songs in studio for us.  Check it out below.

I was informed by Gambling the Muse that Calico Haunts is a "spacey, folk rock creation of Alex Inglehart, with backing contributions by Jenni Snyder (Whiskeytown, Neil Diamond Allstars), Wylie Pamplin (The Strugglers, The Physics of Meaning), Eric Haugen (The Strugglers), and Laura King (The Moaners)."
Raised by Wolves is from Charlotte and describe themselves as psychedelic/garage/ghettotech.

6/4 – Local Beer Local Band Night – Regina Hexaphone and the Stars Explode

As most of you all know, WKNC and Tir Na Nog do this thing called Local Beer Local Band Night.  Each Thursday at Tir Na Nog we have a free show with great local bands and great local brews.  This week's line up is Regina Hexaphone and the Stars Explode.  Also, tune in to 88.1 at 5pm on Thursday, as I will be interviewing Regina Hexaphone.

Here's a qoute from the Independent Weekly about Regina Hexaphone:

"The rustling sun-kissed beauty and easy charm of Regina Hexaphone's folky pop echo the sweet, generous vibe of frontwoman Sara Bell. Just as a wayward smile from someone attractive can brighten your day, nothing feels quite as welcoming as Hexaphone's soothing sonic embrace. A preview of their forthcoming album, Into Your Sleeping Heart, is impressive, indeed, from the nomadic surf-inflected pop of "Waiting for the Wind" to the Dresden-bound gypsy bounce of "The Fortyniner." Elsewhere, they work in a hazy, pillowy drift of receding detail, like a watercolor pulling away and over the horizon." --Chris Parker, Independent Weekly

"The Stars Explode is the new rock band led by Doug Edmunds, co-founding member/songwriter/drummer/vocalist for 90s rockpop underground wonders, Gladhands, and most recently the drummer for Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies. The Stars Explode builds on Edmunds' musical legacy while looking squarely to the future. With influences ranging from the rugged British rock of Paul Weller to the loud guitar pop of the Posies to latter-day singer-songwriters like Grant-Lee Phillips, Jon Brion, and Rhett Miller, Edmunds' new band offers up a delicious blend of musical offerings."--the Stars Explode's Myspace

Jon Hopkins

jonhopkins

ARTIST: JON HOPKINS
ALBUM: INSIDES

Jon Hopkins is a British musician who writes and performs his own music, melody-led electronica. His album Insides is definitely worth listening to.

For someone who has recently supported Coldplay on tour, co-produced a couple of their tracks and has co-written the soundtrack to the forthcoming Peter Jackson film, The Lovely Bones, you wouldn't think that Jon Hopkins would have any time or energy left to release his own solo album.

Fortunately, he did. And the composer, pianist and self-taught studio wizard provides another impressive album packed full of lose-yourself electronica mixed with beautifully haunting piano, synths and a pulsing bass. Insides, his third album offering, rollercoasters from track to track going through the gloomy, the upbeat and somewhere indescribable in-between with almost every song seamlessly interacting with the next.

Commit yourself to seeing the whole album through in one go and you'll find the hypnotic rhythms will take you deep into Jon's delicately created world. In 'Vessel' you just begin to understand the album's title as the distant-thunder sound of pulsating waves merges into the dawn-breaking piano that transports the music deep into your consciousness before it's suddenly regurgitated back up by some intense bass and awakening energetic synths.

'Autumn Hill', 'The Low Places' and 'Small Memory' are stand-out tracks due to Jon's use of piano. Clearly a master of the instrument, it is never overdone, as he creates dark, occasionally balled-esque melodies on top of basslines that wouldn't feel out of place on a dance-floor. 'Wire' has an industrial feel that continues to grow in volume until it reaches an intensive peak, before gradually and symmetrically slowing down and returning to beginning.

Messy-sounding 'Colour Eye' is the exception on the album. The track's etching, scratches and crackles seem a bit too congested and it doesn't quite connect with the rest of the album's gentleness like many other of the songs. What makes Insides great is that it allows you to open your mind and let the atmospheres he's created come in and take over. Jon's in full control here: he's had no remit or strict deadline, resulting in a carefully crafted collection of perfect escapism.

It isn't particularly ground-breaking; in fact, on the grand scale of things it's just another little slice of musical uniqueness. The fact that it comes from someone who understands music in a deeper and more personal way than most in this genre is what makes Insides stand out from the rest.

Murdoc's Local Music Photo Blog: May

Ok so it is June... but it isn't my fault that May kicked ass. I mean seriously. I graduated from NC State, saw my family, and went to some of the best local shows I have been to in a while.

I had planed to attend several big shows in the weeks following graduation, however, I was sadly only able to make it to 3 shows featuring 8 bands. But what great shows they were.

Click on any picture to go to the full Gallery

May 15th: Cat's Cradle: Hey Euphony, Whole Wheat Bread, MC Chris

This show was a mystery for me going in, because I was not familiar with any of the acts; also, I had never been to Cat's Cradle before.

Hey Euphie is a pop punk band based out of Durham

Now on to reason I was interested in the show- Whole Wheat Bread

Whole Wheat Bread is based out of Jacksonville, Florida. The band plays what they like to call Dirty South Punk Rock, an awesome blend of hard punk rock with hip hop style.

s

MC Chris (AKA MC Pee Pants from Aqua Team Hunger Force) finished off the night to a packed crowd. MC Chris performs "nerd core" hip hop. It was suspected by audience members that MC Chris was lip synicing his show. Regardless of the truth of those suspicions, I was not impressed by MC Chris's performance. It was just him, on the stage with his laptop playing his music while he "sang". The most entertaining part of his set was when he called out a heckler in the crowd.

May 20th: Cat's Cradle: Maylene and The Sons of Disaster, Clutch

I had looked forward to this concert for months because Clutch has been one of my favorite bands for the last few years. Native to Maryland and with more than 10 albums to their credit, Clutch passes through the Triangle roughly once a year; and unfortunately does not allow photography at their shows. This year's show, while fun, was a bit of a disappointment from previous times I had seen them. The mosh pit broke out fast, but disappeared just as quickly as it had started, the lead singer didn't have much to say to the crowd, and it was difficult to see the band due to an unusually tall audience. I dare to say metal/hard rockers Maylene and The Sons of Disaster put on a better, higher energy performance.

May 27th: The Pour House: Black Skies, Caltrop , Colossus

This show featured some of the best Raleigh has to offer in hard rock and metal, and I hate myself for not realizing what pocket I had put my camera in. It wasn't until Colossus took that stage that I realized that I hadn't left my camera at home.

Black Skies is from Chapel Hill and was celebrating the vinyl release of Hexagon (5/26/09).  I look forward to seeing more this band in the future because I'm not entirely sure about how much I enjoyed the performance. Part of it was the stage presence of the band, part of it was the annoying buzz that was feeding into the mix from a bad cable. However, I do encourage people to check out their music none the less.

Caltrop, also from Chapel Hill, is the embodiment of local music history with members having been part of Hazerai, Pegasus, El Sucio, The Ladderback, and Valient Thorr. Caltrop produces a hard rock jam band feel that just oozes potential. The band's LP, World Class, lives up to  its' title fully.

To finish the night, Colossus performed to a disappointingly small crowd, but kicked ass anyway.

a

So in 3 weeks time, I saw 4 local bands and 4 non-local, nationally touring bands. Beleive me, the local bands certainly held their ground and put forth some great acts; and not all of the national acts were that great. Going to these shows made me think about the nature of concerts, and to a certain extent, music itself. Perhaps the biggest difference between great music/concerts/bands and everything else, is the experience one walks away with. A show by a great act makes the audience walk away pumped up,  or full of memories and opinions of what they just experienced; a show by a not so great act does not. Part of why this is, is the reason people go to the show in the first place, and part of it is the showmanship of the band. When I went to see Hey Euphony, Whole Wheat Bread and Clutch, I walked away feeling as though I had experienced something. However, if I hadn't stayed for Colossus, and had simply gone home after seeing Black Skies, I may not have felt the same way.

Part of what causes this differentiation in experience lies on the individual at the show, and the other part lies on the shoulders of the band. Colossus, Whole Wheat Bread, Hey Euphony, and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster showed up to perform; not to simply play a gig, but to rock out and have an awesome time. Now this isn't to say that the other bands didn't; perhaps the crowd just wasn't into it, or came to see someone else.

It is for this reason that I ask everyone that goes to support local music, to be active at it. Don't just go to a show to have a couple beers, hang out, or just b.s. around: Go to the show to have an experince. Get into the music, the people on stage, and the people around you. For the love god, dance, hand bang, jump around, or whatever else comes to mind. Just don't stand there with a stick up your butt and bounce your head like a bobble head doll. One thing that bands like Colossus, Red Collar, and other local bands excel at, is bringing the audeince to the edge of thier comfortable "chill" zone and pushing them into having an awesome time.

Sad News for Triangle Music: Bombadil Taking A Break

One of WKNC's longtime favorite local acts Bombadil is taking a break from touring indefinitely due to the health issues of band members.  They released this today:

Taken from Bombadil's MySpace

Today we arrive with some bad news. As many of you have become aware, Daniel has been dealing with severe tendonitis in his hands since 2007. Things have gotten progressively worse and have reached a point where he cannot brush his teeth without feeling pain, much less perform with the rest of the band. As such we feel it's best to cancel all of the remaining shows on our schedule.

Needless to say, this brings us great sadness. We tried to limit Daniel's movements on stage, but it seems that even sitting in a chair and simply singing on stage was impeding his recovery. At the end of the day, we did not feel that it was in the artistic spirit of the band to continue and play shows without him.

It is not clear when we will be able to perform again--some doctors say that a 3 month break would suffice, while others forecast a 2-year recovery period. But in the meantime, we'll be writing new songs and keeping you up to date of our activities. We see this merely as a road bump on the long road that is this band, and as soon as Daniel is able to perform music again, we'll be visiting a town near you.

Our new record will still come out on July 7th, and you will be able to find it at a few select records stores, iTunes, eMusic, Amazon.com, and this very website. We are so excited to share it with the world and are exploring alternative ideas for some sort of release party. For now, we've put up two new songs on myspace: Oto the Bear and So Many Ways to Die. We are also now accepting pre-orders for the record here. Pre-orders will ship from Bombadil HQ here in Durham on July 1.

We are so grateful for the support everyone has shown over the years. Without your ears and encouragement none of this would have been possible.  Stay in touch and look out for more updates on the horizon!

-Bryan, James, Daniel, and Stuart

WKNC wishes the best to the band, and their fans, and a speedy recovery to Daniel.  In the meantime, be sure to catch their new album on rotation on 88.1 around the clock.
