Commercial radio stations that have a modern alternative format are hard to find - and those that put on good winter concerts are even harder to find.
96X is a modern alternative radio station based out of Norfolk, VA. The station will be putting on "Winter Meltdown," featuring Bush, Foster the People, Cake, Cage the Elephant, Taking Back Sunday, The Naked and Famous, Young the Giant, Sleeper Agent, and Grouplove. The event will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, at The Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va. beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Many of the bands performing at Winter Meltdown have already played major festivals this year, including Moogfest, Future Music Festival, Treasure Island Music Festival, Lollapalooza and SXSW.

DJ Ones' Five Music Facts from the past music week

1. At SXSW Jack White unveiled his newest idea, the rolling record store. The record store on wheels, which sells Third Man Record albums, t-shirts, and other paraphernalia. (via Third Man Records)
2. Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame, is set to star in a musical that he himself wrote. The play will be performed in London and will be based around a 16th century spy, John Dee. (via BBC)
3. It has been confirmed that there will be a collaboration between Radiohead frontman, Thome Yorke, and Doom. Not much else is currently available about their upcoming project. (via Pitchfork)
4. The Mountain Goats are doing their part to help raise money for Japan following the tsunamis. The band, which is currently auctioning a one track demo on ebay. All proceeds go towards helping Doctors Without Boarders. (via Pitchfork)
5. TV on the Radio have announced that bassist and keyboardist Gerard Smith has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. (via TV on the Radio)

Go ahead, pull out the wooden ruler and lay down a good whack across the top of my hands. I've been a bad WKNC blogger. If I was being graded on timeliness, there would be a big red "F" at the top of this blog, but, thankfully, you as a blog-reader & lover of WKNC would never employ such emotional damage like that of my former college professors, right?
And although this does not relate to the interview, I wanted to post this pic. Jake Seaton over at Music.MyNC deilvers a wonderful tweet, twitter.com/jseaton, and this picture was in his feed recently. Jake, I won't ask why you weren't blasting WKNC 88.1fm. I will assume that you must have been driving your car, nearing the US-Canadian border, out of our 25,000 watt listening area.

The Love Language TODAY at 2!
The Love Language will be in the studio today at 2pm to do an interview and a few live songs. They are playing in Raleigh tomorrow, Saturday May 9, at The Pour House along with other Raleigh bands Whatever Brains and Gross Ghost. The line-up features a lo-fi cloud of Raleigh, audible debauchery.
Quick facts about each act:
Gross Ghost- This is Mike Dillon's new project. If you live in Raleigh or Chapel Hill you likely know who he is.
Whatever Brains- These guys recently played WKNC's Local Beer Local Band in March and were recently, as I like to say, "shopped," or as others, including The Indy, say kind of "picked up" by Matador Records.
The Love Languge- Remember the band The Capulets who graced Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill with their infectious pop lyrics and handsome faces about four summers ago? I do (eek, for being older than most other DJs). Stu McLamb, a Capulet, went on to form The Love Language with two other Capulets and now, well now The Love Language is infecting the music scene on a national level, including a bit in Spin magazine.

Local Beat recap 3/27/09
So on Friday night Adam from A Rooster for the Masses stopped by with special guest James of Baltimore-based Scary River.
The reason for the occasion? ARFTM was playing at the Pour House that night alongside Scary River and the Desmonds, and playing another show Saturday night at The Cave in Chapel Hill alongside Death to the Details.
We chatted for the better part of an hour about everything from South by Southwest, which Scary River was on its way back from, to songwriting inspiration. Oh, and Adam gave away a copy of "Broken Era," the band's recently-released album, to a lucky listener.

Local Beat recap 3/13/09
On Friday, March 13, we at the Local Beat had a stroke of good luck. It rained and rained and rained, and the NC State baseball game was postponed until Saturday. That meant that we got to have our full 3 hour show! After celebrating with Future Islands' "Beach Foam" and an impromptu station-wide dance party, we got down to business.
At 5:15 I was fortunate to be joined by Mike Jackson of Red Collar via phone from Washington, DC. The band was excited to be kicking off their several-month tour that includes some shows at SXSW and a Saturday stop at Triangle Brewing Company in Durham for their CD Release Party. Mike described it as a "house party, with the biggest house we could find"--perfect place for Red Collar to have a CD release show, if you ask me.
Mike and I chatted a bit about the release show, the recording process, and live versus recorded music, in general. Red Collar has a reputation for putting on a blistering live show, and he affirmed that the CD is "a flyer for the show." Check out the two-part interview below.

We talked about the finer things in life: food and music, both of which were integral parts of the Hillsborough Street Renaissance. Check out the interview below, divided into 3 parts.

DBB Feature #7: Birds of Avalon
Tonight, as in three hours from now, is going to be awesome. It is night two of the Double Barrel Benefit, and keeping with tradition, the second night is rockin with one of my favorite Raleigh groups, Birds of Avalon. BoA, as locals refer to them, are a full force, guitar ripping orgastic, Tecate drinking five piece on Volcom Entertainment Records. I was lucky enough to catch up with these guys back in March of 2008 during South By South West at a warehouse party. The party took a good five minutes to find, but after cruising a strip of warehouses I spotted the beacon of BoA-on-the-road---their white high-top conversion van. It was amazing show, one of the best of my life. Inside was a half pipe with skaters, stacks of Marshall speakers, coolers of Keystone Light, Jennifer Herrera of RTX, Jay Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Witch, and lots and lots of hearing-loss rock'n roll.
Pre-sale tickets for tonight are sold out. However, there will be a LIMITED amount of tickets for sale at the door at 8pm. My advice is to show up at 7:45, pay to get in, and don't leave once you enter the Pour House.
