War of the Worlds: Tweet about the Alien Invasion!

As you may know by now, WKNC will be broadcasting a LIVE, localized version of Orsen Welles' classic radio drama War of the Worlds.  The event will take place Halloween night from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

Want to take part in the invasion?  Tweet about it! Update your Facebook status!

During the broadcast, the news about the aliens will become more and more severe.  You can do the same with your Tweets.  Be creative.  Tell your friends you're freaked.  Tell your friends you're being chased by aliens.  Describe where you're hiding or what you see.  Help us destroy the Triangle for Halloween!  If you are listening on the Internet somewhere outside the Triangle, that's great too!  The aliens are landing everywhere!  We're all doomed!!

Disclaimer: "Help us destroy the Triangle" means, help us pretend to destroy Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and beyond using the radio the Internet, and your imagination.  Please don't do anything stupid and get arrested.  That would be silly.  (And all liability would fall on you, dig?)

EOT10 Yearbooks 10/26/09

Student Media leaders are working on several projects that you don't want to miss out on, so this week, the Eye on the Triangle team interviewed the leaders spearheading some of these projects to give you a look at what's ahead.

SPORTS:
Derek Medlin and John Cooper Elias talked briefly about the football team, the basketball team and more in Wolfpack sports.

VIP:
In this week's VIP, we talked to former Agromeck Editor John Cooper Elias (who also leads yearbook workshops) and current Agromeck Editor Bryant Robbins about why yearbook sales are facing a downward trend and what makes yearbooks still important in this information age. Two articles were cited in the interview about national yearbook trends, one from The Economist and one from The New York Times.

To bring the issue back to home, Matt Moore went around campus and asked students if they saw the important of the yearbook, which you can listen to in the segment.

We also discussed briefly the declining trend in all print media publications, the topic of Tuesday's "Focused" section of Technician, titled "Is print dying?"

For more on the Agromeck, you can add Agromeck Man on Facebook.com or follow @Agromeck on Twitter.com, and you can also follow Technician @ncsutechnician.

COMMUNITY CANVAS:

This week's Community Canvas was extended to give listeners a behind-the-scenes look of WKNC's Halloween broadcast from 7 - 8 p.m., an adaptation of War of the Worlds. Damian Maddalena, who will join the rest of the newly formed radio acting troupe, The Two Cabbage Radio Players, for a performance of “War Of The Worlds."

From Technician: "Based off of H.G. Wellsnovel, the radio play imagines an alien invasion taking over New York, interrupting a broadcast in the process. Damian Maddelena, graduate student in forestry and environmental resources, first had the idea to produce the show about a year ago. He saw a live broadcast that a Los Angeles traveling troupe performed on campus, and it triggered the idea." Check out Thursday's Arts & Entertainment section of Technician for the full story.

WOLFPACKER OF THE WEEK:

This week, I sat down with our student of the week, Andrew Tucker. Tucker, a senior in political science, talked about his new hobby, mixed martial arts and the training he now goes through daily for his fights. He also discussed his involvement with the re-established fraternity on campus, Kappa Alpha, after a five-year hiatus.

SOUNDBYTES:
This week's Soundbytes asked students what their favorite part of the N.C. State Fair 2009 was. As expected, most answers surrounded fried foods.

Be sure to listen to next week's show -- VIP will focus on non-profit organizations, and we'll also be giving you an update on former chancellor James Oblinger's hiring situation.

Whitney "The Voice" Houston delivers with new album

Released 8/31/09I Look To You
4.5/5 stars

When Whitney Houston first burst onto the scene in the mid 80s, she was the pinnacle of musical perfection. Modelesque looks, catchy songs, style, poise, undeniable stage presence and most importantly, a voice with limitless potential. Success surely followed, as Houston eventually sold more than 170 million albums, broke #1 records set by the Beatles and Elvis, earned more than $500 million worldwide at the Box Office, influenced a generation of singers and became the most awarded female artist of all time.

In the seven years since Houston’s last album Just Whitney, the musical landscape has changed a great deal. Record sales are at an all time low, the digital era has become even more dominant and vocal talent is no longer required to have a hit record, auto-tune and nakedness are. Just as the record industry has changed, Houston’s personal life has not gone without its share of transformations as there was the end of a tumultuous marriage to bad-boy Bobby Brown and stints in rehab.

With the release of Houston’s long-awaited “comeback” album, I Look To You, critics and fans alike have asked the question, “is there room for Whitney Houston in this new age?" The answer is quite simply, yes.

I Look To You begins with the catchy first single “Million Dollar Bill," produced and written by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats.  "Million Dollar Bill" is an up-tempo, bass driven track, with a retro-disco vibe and is one of the albums best.

Next is the Danja produced, up-tempo, synth-driven “Nothing But Love."  Houston shares how she has nothing but love for those who have hurt her in the past, while accepting responsibility for her own actions. Other up-tempos include the club worthy Euro-pop “For the Lovers” and the Leon Russell penned classic, made famous by Donny Hathaway, “A Song For You” which starts out as a piano-driven ballad, but soon turns into an electronic techno-smash.

With I Look To You, Houston sings some of the best mid-tempos of her career including the R.Kelly written, Tricky Stewart produced, “Salute," “Worth It” and the Johnta Austin penned Stargate produced “Call You Tonight." "Salute" is the ultimate brush-off anthem done with class, while “Worth It” is the perfect love song reminiscent of Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You”. The Stargate produced, contemporary “Call You Tonight” has Houston singing to a potential love interest that she doesn't have to time connect with.  Any of the aforementioned would be viable singles.

Houston, known for her ability to interpret songs, rather than writing, pens two of the albums island-influenced mid-tempo's, along with R&B singer Akon. The duet “Like I Never Left”, sounds as though it could be directed to the a past lover or the to public in a plea to love her like she never went away. With “I Got You”, Houston talks of love and loyalty and how neither distance nor time can separate loved ones.

Houston is a self-described “balladeer’, so naturally an album from the legendary Icon wouldn’t be complete without a couple of power ballads. With both “I Look To You” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength," Whitney comes from a spiritual place, sharing that when she was lost, it was her faith that brought her through.

Houston covers all bases with an album that will make you want to dance, cry, make love, feel inspired and everything in between. Vocally, the highs may not be as high and the lows are lower, but Houston still delivers and is able to convey each song with the feeling,  power and emotion as only she can. If you are expecting “The Bodyguard” era vocals, you will be disappointed. Whitney’s voice has undergone its share of changes, but is still better than the majority of who you'll hear on the radio.

Houston and "industry father" executive producer, Clive Davis have managed to blend experience with relevance, in keeping with tradition of the classic Whitney we know and love, while remaining fresh and current. Overall, I Look To You is the perfect blend of ballads, mid-tempos and up-tempos from arguably the greatest female vocalist of all time. Welcome back, Whitney.

EOT09 State Fair 10/19/09

This week's Eye on the Triangle decided to give listeners a sneak peek at this year's Pack Howl Act, but as always, our EOT team gave you the regular segments you are used to as well.

NEWS:
Evan Garris gave listeners an update on the balloon boy hoax, the interim executive director of the Alumni Association after Lennie Barton's firing, the H1N1 vaccine running out in Wake County and more.

SPORTS:
Derek Medlin, John Cooper Elias and Tyler Everett analyzed the Pack's performance against Boston College.

VIP:
In this week's VIP, in honor of the North Carolina State Fair being in town, DJ Chris Cioffi took listeners on his journey to enjoy his State Fair experience, spending as little money as possible. He quickly found out that going for free was not a viable option. This year's State Fair included a lot of representation from N.C. State, including an appearance from the infamous Hillsborough Street Barrel Monster, ice cream from N.C. State's Food Science Department, a look at how to milk a cow from N.C. State's Animal Science Club and more.

HOMECOMING:
As promised, Homecoming Chair Adam Compton came on as a guest to Eye on the Triangle to officially announce the Homecoming Pack Howl Act. We talked to him about Homecoming 2009 events and how they compare to previous years' events, and then let him explain the Pack Howl act, which is NOT going to be a band this year. If you haven't read Special K's blog post or listened to the show, we won't ruin the surprise for you.

COMMUNITY CANVAS:
Mike Alston interviewed Megan Gulledge for this week's Community Canvas on her artwork, after reading about Gulledge in Goodnight Raleigh.  Gulledge has an opening at First Friday at the Busy Bee. Here is an excerpt of Gulledge's bio from her Web site: Certain experiences in life change the way you see the world.  When I was in college I traveled to Ireland with eleven other art students and two professors.  We were required to keep journals to document our experiences through writing and drawing.  One of the more interesting techniques that I learned from keeping a journal is to almost remove yourself a level, step back from what you are so immersed in for the sake of capturing it in a more effective way.  A result of that trip was a new perspective on life, an obsession for moments.
Check out some of Megan's artwork below.
[gallery link="file" columns="2"]
HEAR THIS:
Music clips in hear This and throughout Monday's show were from local musicians that are part of the weeklong Cherry Bounce line up. To tell us more about the festival line up and it's progression, Rachel Sloane sat down with event organizers Billy Warden and Greg Behr. You can read more about the festival on wknc.org/blog.

WOLFPACKER OF THE WEEK:
This week's Wolfpacker of the Week was Zach Schnell, a junior in environmental technology and member of the Wolfpack Environmental Association. He sat down with Jacob Downey to talk about sustainability on campus.

SOUNDBYTES:
Student Media Photographer Matt Moore went around campus and talked to students about what they think of the proposed government soda tax. The tax is intended to help pay for health care reform and combat obesity.

It's been quite a few weeks in coming, but Sweet Annie Rich has finally gotten her act together and cut the audio of her interview with Corb Lund on October 3.  Corb provided quite the interview with a lot of his back story and put on an entertaining show later that night at the Berkeley Cafe.

WAR OF THE WORLDS Live Broadcast Halloween Night!

This Halloween night, the Martians are invading the airwaves and striking terror in the hearts of WKNC listeners everywhere.

This live, localized adaptation of the Mercury Theater production of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds is the brainchild of Damian Maddalena, who, as La Barba Rossa, hosts WKNC's Saturday morning 60s and 70s program, Mystery Roach.  Maddalena, along with his Two Cabbage Radio Players, have worked diligently to season the science fiction classic with local flavor.  Sound effects will be performed by Brian Donohoe, member of the local band StarmountAV Geek Skip Elsheimer lends his voice to the production, along with a motley crew of WKNC Djs, NCSU students and community members who share Maddalena's vision and taste for the unusual: DJs Alex Steinbaugh, Caitlin Cauley, Jacob Downey, Liz Cervantes, and Mike Gray, along with grad student Dave Fallest and Magic Babies keyboardist Brandon Whitesell.

The invasion will take place at 7 p.m. on October 31.  You can get ready for Halloween debauchery to the sounds of the Triangle's destruction, only on 88.1 FM or streaming online.

Simple "WKNC Sessions Live" Release Show

SimpleCDReleaseThis Friday, October 23, indie trio Simple will release their new EP titled "WKNC Sessions Live."  This is by no means a coincidence; we here at sessions@KNC recorded this very EP in the Caldwell Lounge back in May.

You should be pumped for a few reasons:

1. This thing rocks.

2. The show and CD are both FREE (but you'll probably get a little nod toward a donation fund).

3. The songs on the CD are slightly different from what you heard online; they've been mastered and sound even better!

The show is at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill Friday at 10 p.m.  You'll also see guest groups Nathan Oliver and Wild Wild Geese; two more bands with totally unique, cool sounds!

Also, Simple will be interviewed during The Local Beat on the same day at 5 p.m. on WKNC 88.1 FM.  Listen in!

As most of our loyal listeners know, the Mars Volta show at the Disco Rodeo has been a highly coveted giveaway for the month of October. On several occasions, our deejays have feared the WKNC phone system would literally explode due to the high influx of callers. However, like a big bully tangling a nerdy kid's lunch money over his head, many listeners have come away empty handed.

But don't pick up the D&D dice or that Mountain Dew Code Red just yet. For the rest of the week, WKNC deejays will be giving away the last remaining pairs of the tickets to Mars Volta show on Friday October 23rd. For The Win!

The Mars Volta

Formed from the ashes of At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta a band committed to experimenting with a hardcore and psychedelic rock sound. Now on their fifth album, Octahedron, the boys plan to shake up Raleigh before heading out on their European tour.

Listen on 88.1 or streaming online for your chances to win!

Homecoming 2009 Pack Howl act announced!

If you missed it, WKNC's newly created public affairs show, Eye on the Triangle, had the honor tonight of announcing this year's Pack Howl act. N.C. State's Homecoming in previous years has featured The Avett Brothers, Guster, N.E.R.D., Common and Crossfade. This year, however, a band won't be performing in the Pack Howl Concert. Instead, on Friday, Nov. 6, the CollegeHumor Live Comedy Tour will be performing in Pack Howl, ending the week's festivities.

The show starts at 7 p.m. on Lee Field. This event is open to the public, and students don't have to reserve tickets in advance. Homecoming Chair Adam Compton said he hopes to attract at least 2,000 people.

Tell us what you think about this year's Homecoming act. Send us your thoughts to publicaffairs@wknc.org.

Interview with Lizzy Ross This Friday, Oct. 16

Most people might recognize the powerful and beautiful voice of Lizzy Ross as the lead singer of Chapel Hill's own Lafcadio. With  booming success within the Triangle and a recent performance at Shakori Hills Grassroots Fall Music Festival, it's a wonder how Ross, a full time philosophy and music student at UNC-Chapel Hill, has time to embark on her solo career. However, the future looks bright for this young musician who recently received praise for her tracks Maria, Slave to the Muse, and No Man on Lafcadio's self-titled LP. She also plans to graduate this December.

Lizzy Ross

Be sure the check out the interview and live in studio performances from Lizzy Ross this Friday at 2 p.m. with yours truly, DJ Special K.

EOT07 Football Part 2 10/5/09

After you got a brief rundown of the latest news from Eye on the Triangle, we kicked the show off with two great, short monologues. Saja Hindi sat down with two VIP N.C. State fans — one is a student who doesn't particularly enjoy football games but sometimes attends tailgates for the social atmosphere and one is an alumnus who is such a sports devotee, he now is interning at the Wolfpack Club.

This week's Hear This consisted of the EOT team giving listeners a look into local history within WKNC's own library. Mike Alston gave a brief history and clip from the Backsliders, which broke up in 1999; Jacob Downey — the Boy Wonder Jinx, which broke up in 1998; and Rachel Sloane — Ladderback, which broke up in 2002.

For Community Canvas, Mike sat down with photojournalist Jason Arthurs who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2003 with a degree in journalism to hear about his work. Arthurs now works as a freelancer and produces both print photography and video content.

Finally, this week's Wolfpacker of the Week was Liz Walters, a senior in graphic design and representative of Campus Arts Council and Arts N.C. State.
