Friday Night Hardcore at Katmandu's

Both touring bands and local ragers destroyed Katmandu on Hillsborough Street the night of November 9th. The bill for this devastating display of hardcore and grind madness was BrainXToilet (first show!), Mad Dog, Last Words, and Cheap Art, from Atlanta, Georgia.

Opening this killer show was BrainXToilet, a refreshing mix of blistering, technical grindcore and crushing breakdowns from Greensboro, NC. This band features members of another grind band from Greensboro, Priapus. Jordan, also the vocalist of Priapus, stomped in a fit of rage, pushing bystanders away as he yelled into the microphone. Jeremy, guitarist of Priapus, blasted away on his drumset while the guitarist shredded with ease.

Mad Dog made the crowd go wild as Ira, Mad Dog's drummer, unleashed his raw, speedy drumming. Mad Dog is a high-energy powerviolence act from Raleigh, NC. Being a year since their first show, it's great to see how much they've progressed musically. Ace, the guitarist, also plays bass in Abuse, another Raleigh powerviolence band. Despite minor technical difficulties, Eli's harsh vocals were loud and clear.

Another Raleigh favorite, Last Words, played yet another unforgettable set packed with high-speed riffing and crucial moshing. Marina, vocalist, made it clear that not moshing was absolutely not an option! For not a single second did the crowd go dull.

Cheap Art, a ripping hardcore band from Atlanta, killed their set with poser-crushing, chaotic female-fronted fastcore/powerviolence. The songs were short and sweet. A 20-minute set of high-energy, crushing blasts riddled with mosh parts was all they needed.

Hopefully there will be more hardcore shows at Katmandu's. Really enjoyed this one.

On this week's Eye on Triangle, we bring you stories from across NC State, as our contributor Jay speaks with students from the Democratic and Republican Parties. In addition, Lucia returns with another Eye on the Arts. Deondre' spoke with a representative of one of the largest anti-drug organizations in the world. Summer Eye on the Triangle!

It's summer! That's right, school's out, but that doesn't mean we've gone anywhere! It's out first Eye on the Triangle for the summer. We've changed out schedule just a little bit, so now we'll only be broadcasting every other week instead of every week. But don't worry! Come August, we'll go right back to the weekly schedule.

This week, we've got stories of the summer festival Theaterfest, happening right here on the NC State Campus, as well as coverage of the ongoing Eugenics settlements happening all around the state. In addition, we show a little love to our home city, Raleigh! Tune in, it's going to be a great show!

EOT 70 Raleigh Elections 10/4/11

This episode, we provide coverage on the Raleigh elections taking place on October 11th, including interviews with two of the three mayoral candidates, and a school board candidate from district 8.  We discuss the two bonds also up for approval next week and the Occupy Raleigh movement.  We also got some elections-related soundbytes from around campus, and as always, the weather.

Moogfest 2011 - Get entered to win!

North Carolina is on point with fall music festivals - in September, Raleigh hosted Hopscotch Music Festival. This weekend, Pittsboro will have Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival. At the end of the month, Moogfest will reign in Asheville.



Moogfest, named for Bob Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer who was a research professor at UNC-Asheville, is back for its annual music festival during the weekend of October 28 – 30.  Different venues across Asheville's downtown will host The Flaming Lips, STS9, Passion Pit, TV on the Radio and many more.  In addition to a packed lineup, there will also be artists in panel discussions, question and answer sessions, and workshops.  One thing I'm particularly excited about is the opportunity, in honor of Moog himself, to try out a variety of Moog instruments. There will also be visual art exhibitions, installations, and film screenings.

WKNC has two pairs of weekend passes to give away for this event - but it will take a little luck! Each day until October 21, one WKNC DJ will do a giveaway to get a listener put into a drawing the tickets. During Local Lunch on October 21, DJ Kligz will do the drawing live on-air and announce the recipients of the weekend passes.

EOT52 Haiti: One Year Later 1/25/11

EOT04 Raleigh v. Durham 9/14/09

Monday's episode of Eye on the Triangle focused on the Raleigh-Durham divide and how various people view the two cities, in addition to a couple of segments on SPARKcon, and more.

VIP:
In this week's VIP segment, Adam Compton interviewed Durham Mayor Bill Bell and Caitlin Cauley spoke to Triangle residents Josef Komenda and Rachel Nabors. I also spoke with our resident Triangle expert, who many of you may remember as WKNC's general manager last year, Kyle Robb, about the history of the two cities and what he thought about Caitlin and Adam's interviews.
