Band of Horses Coming to Raleigh May 8th

Live Nation will be presenting Band of Horses at The Ritz here in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 8th! All this week, WKNC will be giving away tickets, so tune in for your chance to win. My Morning Jacket closes out their month-long summer tour with Band of Horses Sunday, Aug. 26 at the downtown Raleigh Amphitheater. WKNC listeners will have chances to win tickets all this week, so keep your radio on 88.1 FM.

General admission tickets to the pit area in front of the stage are gone, but tickets for the front two seated sections and the lawn are still available via Live Nation. A dollar of the ticket price will be donated to the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation.

My Morning Jacket makes summer stop in Raleigh

My Morning Jacket will team up with Band of Horses this summer for a month-long tour culminating with a Sunday, Aug. 26 performance at the downtown Raleigh Amphitheater. Thanks to our friends at Live Nation, lucky WKNC listeners have a chance to win tickets before they go on sale this Saturday, May 5 at 10 a.m.



For those without fast fingers or who don't have 860-0881 and 515-2400 on speed dial (remember to add the 919!), lawn tickets will run $36.50 each (fees included), while reserved seating tops out at $57.85 a ticket (again, fees included). A dollar of the ticket price will be donated to the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation. My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses will also perform Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre in Charlotte. The Charlotte Public Tree Fund will receive a $1 for each ticket sold to the Charlotte show.

A Sultry Evening with Lucinda Williams at NCMA

It was a hot Wednesday evening at the outdoor amphitheater at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Muggy, humid, and as Lucinda Williams described, "sultry".  I thought to myself, of course we're enjoying the sultry weather,  as I usually describe her voice as such. For those unfamiliar with Lu's sound,  I like to say that if Janis Joplin and Dolly Parton had a baby, it would be Lucinda Williams.

It was a late start for the show.  Someone spoke of Lucinda's potential stage fright, but I think it was more that she was waiting for the hot sun to go completely down before starting to rock. Blake Mills, an unannounced opener, played mellow guitar before Lu came out. Blake Mills is the former  guitarist for indie rock band Band of Horses, and has been playing backup guitar for various artists. We were to discover one of the artists he has been playing guitar with was none other than Lucinda herself. Some members of the audience were pleased with his work, while some other die-hard Lu fans thought he wasn't doing the songs justice. What do you think?

Speaking of die-hard Lu fans, there definitely is a type. They are strong, middle aged women with husbands (or partners) who usually wear button-up Hawaiian shirts to concerts.  They enjoy picnics from Whole Foods and probably drive Subaru Outbacks. I love these fans. They get up and dance during their favorite songs, shamelessly and happily.  Lucinda provided their favorite songs -- Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Greenville, Blue, and many others. What's your favorite Lucinda tune?

Her lifelong fans, the aforementioned dancing middle aged women, enjoyed the show. Me, a less-than-middle aged woman, found that I prefer the recorded versions. They sound fuller, deeper, and of course, can be heard out of the 100 degree heat.  Despite the heat and the sounds hanging in the muggy air, it was a good show. Most current popular female country/rock  stars lack the depth Lucinda carries. It was a musical treat most young women my age will not get to experience.

If you've never been to a show at NCMA, its a great venue. You just feel sophisticated sitting there. Bring a chair or a blanket and some snacks, and you'll thoroughly enjoy yourself. Their line up this summer has been amazing and is consistently great from year to year. Next week, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings will take the stage. Definitely a show you do not want to miss. Elly May and Ones Discuss Album Disappointments of 2010

Recently I sat down with my good pal DJ Elly May to go over what we thought were some of the biggest let-downs of 2010. This is not to say that either of us hated any of the albums that we listed (although in some cases that was most certainly the case), rather, these are albums that we thought would deliver but sadly did not. Elly May and myself sat behind the mic and discussed in depth what let us down this year, and we have that conversation below. For those of you out there who just want to figure out the set of albums we were underwhelmed with, I have conveniently listed them below in no particular order. DJ Ones' Five Music Facts from the past week

1. The Libertines are set to reunite after they played their last show together in 2004. The band is set to play both the Reading and Leeds festivals. All 4 of the original band members will be returning in late August. The only area of uncertainty has been the status of Pete Doherty who has run into problems with the law as of late. 2. Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse is currently in the process of writing for a Cartoon Network show entitled "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack." Brock is said to be working on a special that the show is creating, and no exact date for when the show will air has been announced just yet. (via Pitchfork)

3. Toro y Moi has had to cancel several tour dates after being robbed. After their show in Brooklyn the band's car was broken into with member Chaz Bundick having his laptop and passport stolen. No plans have been made to make up those missed shows. (via Pitchfork)

4. Jack White has revealed that The White Stripes' song "Seven Nation Army" was almost not released. The group's record label at the time was initially opposed to releasing the duo's most easily recognizable song as a single in 2003. White said, "I wanted to put Seven Naiton Army out as a single. The label in England and the label in America both didn't want to." (via NME)

5. Band of Horses have announced the tracklisting and the release date for their follow up to 2007's "Cease to Begin." The new album entitled "Infinite Arms" is set to release in mid May, and their first single from the album is the track "Compliments." (via NME)
