Remembering the Walkman

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day. He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant 1979 WalkmanTHAT big. It was the size of a small book.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the Sony Walkman. As someone nearly that old myself, I felt it necessary to share this BBC article in which a 13-year-old boy trades in his iPod for its much older, distant cousin.

  1. It can not possibly be 30 years?? Can it?

Now the Walkman did improve in size and usability that I am sure of. I know I still have one sitting around somewhere gathering dust, not sure if it still works or not. I think I probably had 3 or four of them during the time I was in school and I can always remember them getting smaller and then eventually "almost" water proof options I think? I also remember the very first CD Walkman I ever had and I know my tape Walkman outlasted the CD version for sure.

Everything changes with time, look at how big the early mobile telephones were. They certainly have come along it leaps and bounds as well.

I think the best thing about the Walkman is the fact that there weren't so many switches and knobs or touchable spots or screens etc., These days it seems to take a week just to learn how a new telephone works let alone ipods!

Great story though and glad to see the old stuff does get remembered sometimes!
