No Local Beat this evening, 2/17/12

Due to a baseball game there will be no Local Beat this evening. It's the Wolfpack's first game of the season and they will be taking on the Marshall Thundering Herd right here in Raleigh at Doak Field at 3 p.m. Last season NCSU went 35-27 overall and made it to the Columbia Regionals in the NCAA tournament before falling to Stetson on June 5, 2011. Since then, NCSU has accumulated a nice recruiting class and have many players back again to try and win the ACC Championship for the first time since 1992.

It is likely that the game will end before 8 p.m., when The Local Beat is scheduled to go off the air, but I will not be coming in and there are no guests for the evening.

In the meantime, tune in and listen to the baseball team hopefully start the season off right with a win!

Bonnaroo 2012 Lineup Announced

For Valentine's day this year, AC Entertainment decided to give its fans one of the best loving gifts any music festival-goer could ask for, the lineup for Bonnaroo's 11th year.

The headliners include Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish and The Beach Boys. What I found particularly neat about this year's lineup is many of the acts chosen for Bonnaroo have made visits to the Triangle's venues in the past year or plan to in the next few months -- The Beach Boys (coming in April), Bon Iver, The Avett Brothers (coming in March), Feist (coming in May), Ludacris (N.C. State University's campus last year), Ben Folds Five, Umphrey's McGee, Punch Brothers, Yelawolf, Dawes, The Black Lips, Phantogram, The Joy Formidable, The Antlers, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Das Racist, Delta Spirit, Trampled by Turtles, The War on Drugs (coming in March), and Fruit Bats, just to name a few.

This is just another reason to pat yourselves on the back for being a part of the Triangle's taste-making community, whether you're a venue, musician, concert goer, radio listener, or even blog reader. You're awesome.

The festival will take place about nine hours away from Raleigh in Manchester, Tenn. on June 7-10.  Tickets will go on sale Saturday, Feb. 18, at noon.

Kooley High interview tonight on WKNC's 'Real RnB & Hip-Hop Radio,' 2/11/12

North Carolina hip-hop collective Kooley High will be stopping by the WKNC studios tonight, Feb. 11, on Real RnB & Hip-Hop Radio. Tune in at 10 p.m. as Mir.I.am interviews Charlie Smarts, Tab-One, Rapsody, Foolery, The Sinopsis and Ill Digitz for the first time.

Kooley High recently released their sophomore album titled David Thompson after the great NC State basketball player. Find out more about the album here.

Eye on the Triangle 2/7/12

For this week's Eye on the Triangle, Will Allen interviews some members of Vote Against, a group campaigning against Proposition 1, up for vote this spring. Contributor Mark Herring has some thoughts on the always-controversial Charles Darwin as well as the war in Afghanistan. Deondre Jones has some thoughts about our fast paced way of life. As always, we've got one eye on the arts, weather, news, and current events around campus.

The Local Beat Preview 2/3/12

Tonight on The Local Beat we are introducing two bands who have just recently arrived to our airwaves. At 5 p.m. we are greeting Jeff Shields, who has a wonderful electronica solo act called Kleptonaut. Kleptonaut released its newest album, The Golden Age of Space Travel, in November 2011, and it is full of beautifully synthesized instrumentals and wonderfully produced special effects. Jeff is also quite a character with a great sense of humor so there is no doubt he will be an entertaining guest.

At 6 p.m. we are bringing on some old Local Beat guests under a new guise: Alpha Cop. Perhaps you have heard this new psychedelic indie math rock group on our airwaves for the past couple of weeks but now is your chance to meet them. A group of veteran musicians from very diverse backgounds, Alpha Cop blends psychedelic rock with progressive math vibes to create a wholly unique and interesting sound. We will be chatting about the band and their new EP This One's For Luck.
