EOT85 Smoking Ban 2/28/12

Smoking Ban Bill - Historically, tobacco has been one of the biggest cash crops here in the Tar Heel State.  From the Tobacco District in Durham to the American Tobacco Trail, it has played a large role in our history, including right here at N.C. State. Some student senators want to ban smoking on campus, so our contributor Andrew sat down with the senator that introduced this bill.

Disney Movies - Disney movies played a big role in shaping the childhoods of many of us here at EOT.  We discuss which ones are the best and belong in the top ten.

Greek Step Off - Greek life plays a prominent role on our campus.  Tomorrow night is the second annual Kappa Step Off presented by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.  Here's Rebekah with the step master of Kappa Xi.

Torture in America - Torture has often been a hot button issue in American foreign policy over the past decade.  Deondre' Jones sat down with a representative of NC Stop Torture Now to discuss the state of torture in the world today.

Spring Break is right around the corner, and we're just as ready as anyone else for it! Before we clock out, we've got one more show! This week Andrew and Grant cover the smoking issue on our campus, Deondre' has a discussion about torture, and Rebekah covers the upcoming Greek Step-Off! It's going to be a great show, so tune in!

The Local Beat Preview 2/24/12

Tonight's Local Beat will be starting at 5 p.m. while we showcase some brand new tunes by musicians from our state.

At 6 p.m. the interviews will be starting up as we welcome Justin Robinson & the Mary Annettes onto the program for the first time. Justin is a Local Beat alum (his old band the Carolina Chocolate Drops visited our studio before) so we will welcome him back with his new group to chat about the band and their new album, Bones for Tinder. Justin is a highly entertaining and knowledgeable interviewee so I greatly look forward to hearing his thoughts on a variety of topics.

At 7 p.m. we are bringing in local ambient group Oulipo to talk about the band. As many of you know, I have been following Oulipo for sometime now so I am thankful to finally have them on the program to chat about their music and work.

Update on Eye on the Triangle!

We've been hard at work getting caught up on some things we've been putting off for a while now. You can now find all of our Podcasts online under the "Listen" link right here on the website! Our Valentine's Day show was a big success, and as Spring Break approaches, we're doing our best to make sure we'll be back to bring you the news once school is back in session. Included in this week's show was a discussion on the national deficit, coverage of the N.C. State Student Secular Alliance, and a little bit about the NCSU Memes that have been making the rounds on campus.

The Deficit - It seems that lately nothing in government can get done without a discussion about the deficit.  But what does all the rhetoric actually mean?  Here's Will with a report.

Secular Student Alliance - NC State is an enormous school with many different kinds of thoughts and beliefs on campus.  Mark recently sat down with members of the Secular Student Alliance to delve a little bit into what exactly they do or do not believe.

NCSU Memes -  If you have a Facebook and you currently attend NC State, you've probably seen them: the funny pictures with funny captions detailing some aspect of life on campus.  But how did these NCSU memes pop up overnight?  Our new contributor Grant is here to shed some light on this latest phenomenon.

Long Distance Relationships - Deondre' has some thoughts about something he has personal experience with.  Anyone who's ever been in a long distance relationship might be able to relate to this piece.

GOP Family Feud - Many people today liken the current GOP primary race to something of a circus, or a game show.  Mark believes they are the same in everything but name.

Valentine's Day Soundbytes - Whether you love it or hate it, it seems everybody has an opinion on Valentine's Day.  New contributor Rebekah recently went out in search of what NC State students have on their minds.

Biochemistry of Love - We all know that love will drive you mad, but there is actually a whole science devoted to figuring out just why it is love makes people do the crazy things they do.  Here to shed some light on the science behind love is Mark.

10 Reasons Why It's Great to be Single - As Jake cites some reasons to be single, a lively discussion is held regarding love and life between the hosts and some contributors.

Political Identities - In today's heated political arena, it seems that everyone leans hard left or hard right, and for many, that's all that matters.  Deondre' thinks that maybe that's not all that matters.

Ron Paul - Ron Paul is a seen as a very controversial and divisive figure in GOP politics.  Many call him a fringe candidate, and don't believe he will be successful in his run fo rthe nomination.  Our new contributor Andrew, however, thinks we shouldn't count him out just yet.

Slaughterhouse Five - In an excerpt from his novel, Kurt Vonnegut reads about what war should be like in a more peaceful world.

Racing the Cure - Rebekah brings some information about this upcoming event, a local benefit concert featuring many local artists.

No Local Beat this evening, 2/17/12

Due to a baseball game there will be no Local Beat this evening. It's the Wolfpack's first game of the season and they will be taking on the Marshall Thundering Herd right here in Raleigh at Doak Field at 3 p.m. Last season NCSU went 35-27 overall and made it to the Columbia Regionals in the NCAA tournament before falling to Stetson on June 5, 2011. Since then, NCSU has accumulated a nice recruiting class and have many players back again to try and win the ACC Championship for the first time since 1992.

It is likely that the game will end before 8 p.m., when The Local Beat is scheduled to go off the air, but I will not be coming in and there are no guests for the evening.

In the meantime, tune in and listen to the baseball team hopefully start the season off right with a win!

Bonnaroo 2012 Lineup Announced

For Valentine's day this year, AC Entertainment decided to give its fans one of the best loving gifts any music festival-goer could ask for, the lineup for Bonnaroo's 11th year.

The headliners include Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish and The Beach Boys. What I found particularly neat about this year's lineup is many of the acts chosen for Bonnaroo have made visits to the Triangle's venues in the past year or plan to in the next few months -- The Beach Boys (coming in April), Bon Iver, The Avett Brothers (coming in March), Feist (coming in May), Ludacris (N.C. State University's campus last year), Ben Folds Five, Umphrey's McGee, Punch Brothers, Yelawolf, Dawes, The Black Lips, Phantogram, The Joy Formidable, The Antlers, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Das Racist, Delta Spirit, Trampled by Turtles, The War on Drugs (coming in March), and Fruit Bats, just to name a few.

This is just another reason to pat yourselves on the back for being a part of the Triangle's taste-making community, whether you're a venue, musician, concert goer, radio listener, or even blog reader. You're awesome.

The festival will take place about nine hours away from Raleigh in Manchester, Tenn. on June 7-10.  Tickets will go on sale Saturday, Feb. 18, at noon.

Kooley High interview tonight on WKNC's 'Real RnB & Hip-Hop Radio,' 2/11/12

North Carolina hip-hop collective Kooley High will be stopping by the WKNC studios tonight, Feb. 11, on Real RnB & Hip-Hop Radio. Tune in at 10 p.m. as Mir.I.am interviews Charlie Smarts, Tab-One, Rapsody, Foolery, The Sinopsis and Ill Digitz for the first time.

Kooley High recently released their sophomore album titled David Thompson after the great NC State basketball player. Find out more about the album here.

Contributor Mark Herring has some thoughts on the always-controversial Charles Darwin as well as the war in Afghanistan. Deondre Jones has some thoughts about our fast paced way of life. The Local Beat Preview 2/3/12

Tonight on The Local Beat we are introducing two bands who have just recently arrived to our airwaves. At 5 p.m. we are greeting Jeff Shields, who has a wonderful electronica solo act called Kleptonaut. Kleptonaut released its newest album, The Golden Age of Space Travel, in November 2011, and it is full of beautifully synthesized instrumentals and wonderfully produced special effects. Jeff is also quite a character with a great sense of humor so there is no doubt he will be an entertaining guest.

At 6 p.m. we are bringing on some old Local Beat guests under a new guise: Alpha Cop. Perhaps you have heard this new psychedelic indie math rock group on our airwaves for the past couple of weeks but now is your chance to meet them. A group of veteran musicians from very diverse backgounds, Alpha Cop blends psychedelic rock with progressive math vibes to create a wholly unique and interesting sound. We will be chatting about the band and their new EP This One's For Luck.
