Friday, August 12 on "The Local Beat" is the beginning of our next Local Beat Flashback Series which we do one month a year. Throughout the rest of August we will be looking back at past episodes and dusting off some oldies from the vault.
This week we are bringing back two Local Beat Mini Exclusives from April and a live interview from back in November 2010.
Starting off the hour will be an interview we did on November 5, 2010 with members from The Light Pines. The Light Pines have been in the news recently with their free downloadable release of their debut album which came out just a short time ago. In the interview from last year we talked about that new album and the future plans of the band. It should be interesting to see how things panned out for the group between November and now.
The second hour of the show goes to a Local Beat Mini Exclusive from April with The Huguenots. The band's bassist, York, came in to chat about the band's debut release. However, not even two weeks after the interview with me, the band called it quits. Still, it made for an interesting conversation.
The final hour of the episode belongs to another April Mini Exclusive, this one with Adam Eckhardt of A Rooster For The Masses, who sat down with me to chat about their newest album, No One Is Ready. Adam is always a great conversationalist and it made for some fantastic discussions.

Local Beer Local Band, March 10
This Thursday,New Raleigh, WKNC, and Tir Na nOg form into the trinity of awesomeness to bring you The Loners, The Huguenots, and Special Guests.
I have never NEVER been disappointed by a Loners show. Rock Duo. Plain and simple. "The Loners have a unique history in the Raleigh music scene. They can be considered the diamond in the rough (the rough being the closing of Kings Barcade in downtown Raleigh in the spring of 2007). After reuniting to play the last show at Kings, the band decided to stay together because of the outpouring of support they receive from the show. " - B Berry of WKNC
The Huguenots are "invitingly familiar, as warm and fuzzy as your favorite sweater or treasured vinyl crackling underneath a needle's touch. Part of that familiarity comes from the band's thirst for short, accessible, guitar-driven gems—the 3.5-minute pop song, naturally. The band's quick bursts of energy give it plenty of charm. Also at the pub this Thursday is the brewer series. Held every Thursday, the Tir Na nOg Brewer Series features great North Carolina craft beer, authentic music from the Triangle, and highlights other local businesses that makes Raleigh unique!
This month we've got Aviator Brewing Company to join us, along with Crumb Bakeryy, and there will be shirts from Apheele Creations. Aviator will be releasing their Belgium Saison. YUM.
WKNC and Tir Na nOg are happy to bring you this FREE, 21 and up event. Meet the brewers at 9 p.m. Music starts at 10 p.m. Grab yourself a tasty local brew (they’re on special!) and enjoy some local live music.

Expanding my local music horizons
This is what I love about WKNC: I stop by to give some love to one of my favorite people, when the Local Lunch airplay makes me stop, mid-sentence, and demand, “who is this?” Today it was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. A very 1969 sound, but clearly more than just a hippie groove, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have officially made my “need to know list.” From its Web site, it’s clear the band's favorite touring destinations are along the West Coast, but it may be a while before I try to catch a concert. I am, however, stalking them on Myspace, and may even splurge for the iTunes album, “Up From Below.” I’m diggin’ the song “Janglin,” particularly on this rainy weekend.
In other local music happenings, if you missed the first Local Beer Local Band of the school year, you missed out. I went mainly to see this band my friend has been gushing about: A Rooster for the Masses. I’ll admit, my friend was right on the mark. But, while Rooster was awesome, I was more taken with the grungy-goodness of that night's other act, Free Electric State. The lead singer’s deep voice meshes beautifully with the truly “electric” sound of rock, but not so much that you can’t sing/dance/jam/shake you booty/headbang along with a catchy set of lyrics.
Be sure to be at Tir Na Nog next Thursday for Local Beer Local Band, and see what the hype is all about. The Huguenots are playing alongside The Stars Explode for what will be sure to be another fantastic FREE show in the Triangle.
